Is Government the Only Force Able to End Amazon Dominance?

Speakers at last week's UK Futurebook conference offered ideas for combating Amazon dominance, including advocating government intervention and ending DRM.
Here's a thought experiment for you: what if Amazon was owned by the US government? Would public opinion turn and leave them as despised as the Post Office?
